Cura has Delta printer support in a way. It’s a bit more tricky to get working, but it’s definately possible. You need to add disallowed areas that make the bed a circle.
Cura is not a closed system. Far from it. But Ultimaker is paying for most of the development, so Ultimaker decides what features those developers (Myself included) develop.
I’ve tried to approach other 3D printer companies who use Cura (or don’t have slicing software of their own) if they are interested in allocating resources towards Cura, so that everyone can benefit. So far we’ve only had LulzBot who are going to develop Cura 2.x as well.
So Cura is only a “closed eco system” because hardly anyone but Ultimaker and Lulzbot who actually contribute.
So if you want proper delta support: Build it. It’s not that hard to do it “right”. If your code is up to snuff and works, it will be merged if you do a pull request.
@Jaime_van_Kessel We don’t have software developers on our team yet, so we can’t program it in. The only issue I see at the moment is the box that remains after you add a delta. A bit confusing for new-comers to 3D printing who want plug-n-play. If there’s any other way I can help to add it in, please let me know. You can PM me.
As @Jaime_van_Kessel said, right now there is not. But you can define “no go” areas, and thus you need to define a bunch of those to turn a square into a circle.
+Peter van der Walt@Daid_Braam We can’t suggest to our users to use Cura 2 if it does that. It will confuse new comers and then we will get a bunch of emails asking us how to fix it.
I’m no programmer, but how difficult is it to fix that issue? I can’t imagine it’s too complicated, is it?
+Peter van der Walt@Jaime_van_Kessel I would prefer to stick with Cura. We looked into Matterhackers, but not a big fan of their UI, though I’ve heard it’s due for an upgrade soon, so we’ll see. What do you have in mind peter?
@Jaime_van_Kessel Could you please help point +Peter van der Walt in the correct direction so he can modify cura for a delta and you guys can maybe push it into an official release?
