This community rocks. I was reading these replies last night on my phone, but wanted to wait until I could sit at a keyboard to respond.
@Eclsnowman My question about the delta was more along the lines of “Should I get the Rostock v2 kit, build it, and use that instead of the i3 to build the HercuLien?” Is there value in having a delta in your arsenal, filling a need that the i3 and HercuLien will not?
As for dual extrusion, I like the idea of having disolvable support, but I’ve only talked to one person who swears by it. It seems the general concensus is the one you share, and I’m good enough listening to the collecting wisdom on this; it’s not something I need to figure out myself.
If the Bondtech extruder is ‘the’ extruder to run, what is ‘the’ hotend to run? I’m not interested in saving a little money, I’m interested in buying right and buying once (or as seldom as possible). I see the E3Dv6 is pretty popular. I like the idea of being able to run either 1.75 or 3mm, but other than the kickstarter coming up this month, I don’t know what that solution looks like.
@Ted_Huntington From what I can see, the HercuLien will cost about $2k USD total. I’ll find out.
Thanks again for all the responses guys, I appreciate it.
@Greg_Johnson it really depends on your wallet if you can afford it deltas are amazing, and lots of fun to print with. Then again my friends highly tuned prusa I3 has turned out some of the highest quality prints I have ever seen in person. Plus the ability to run Flexible filaments with a direct drive extruder is a real bonus.
For the hot end E3D v6 is hands down the best for just about every filament… (Unless you are all PLA, then a genuine J-head is hard to beat).
If you want to be able to run both 1.75 & 3.0 just get one of each and setup dual extrusion with the primary as 1.75, and the secondary as 3.0. That might also help print flexibles via the Bowden because 3.0 in ninjaflex would perform much better (like an Ultimaker).
I’d just add something about the Delta-> HercuLien route. I bought a Kossel mini kit to basically go down that path. I thought I was a reasonably skilled builder, but I’m having a heck of a time getting dimensionally accurate prints out of it. Admittedly I have very little spare time and spend an hour here and there on it, but there are so many mechanical variables in the build to get right. YMMV. I do love watching the delta work though, it’s pretty magical. The other thing is that I’d love a direct drive printer for flexible filaments, if I was starting now I’d look at building Alex’s Talos (https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/106411395795447750286) and then move onto a Euth/Herc.
