I still don’t really understand why chrome is returning false to the getContext function.
solved.
the new version of chrome seemed to install with different gpu flags. so checking chrome://gpu showed a whole lot of problems
i went into chrome://flags and enabled everything that looked even vaguely suspicious, then reloaded. all now well again.
