No, the pro mini is 328 - the pro mini is what I was using for all my small embeddable projects before I discovered the teensy family 
(Also I hear you on the docs - I have a few more examples that I want to write up - and I want to do a round of documenting the library and use cases - time time, I need more time!)
Also - I love that these conversations come up on here - because in the side conversation that Mark and I were having about kicking the Gemma and Trinket into shape, we discovered 2 things. One was that the Gemma and Trinket in 8Mhz mode appear to be able to drive the ws2811 with our code, sans inline brightness adjustment (naturally, since there’s no mul instruction), though it probably needs more testing, it just got the single led smoke test so far.
More importantly, though - I worked out a way to be able to bring back inline brightness adjustment - but that may need to be a 2.1 feature.
