11" LCD pulled out of a dead HP Netbook, 3D printed panels, driver board, Intel stick PC. Booya! It’s running Repetier Host just fine. Who needs an LCD controller when I have this bolted into my 3D printer. Add a WebCam and remote control like LogMeIn and I have total awesomeness!
wow that’s cool. That’s like something I would do :), awesome job.
I am doing a 17" touchscreen version next made out another dead laptop LCD and an afermarket touch panel. I hate the idea of tossing all those cool components when a laptop dies from heat and I likewise hate tying down a computer to a printer. Besides the panels which now can be easily customized, all else is off the shelf. The panels are printed in white PLA which glows when the panel is on and because I used 3mm blue acrylic for the rear panel you get a nice blue glow in dim rooms.
Like the idea of the blue glowing, green would be cool to look at also.
I had a 21" arcade LCD touch screen from a poker machine that I used as a computer screen before on a cocktail cabinet. worked well.
Awesome. Did you see my post with the fluorescent green back on a 15" LCD also from a dead laptop (yeah my old laptops started to bite the dust)…? It’s somewhere on G+
Naa didn’t see it, I’ll have a look.
Hmmm… So I could do this with my old dell netbook with touchscreen. Sounds like new life for an old toy! I love this idea.
So long as your touchscreen is something you can drive, sure. However if you can separate the touch panel from the screen and replace it with an aftermarket one, you can run just about whatever you want. I have old laptop LCDs acting as secondary monitors, as RasPi screens and so on.
I used to have problems with artifacts when printing from a netbook. It didn’t have the processing power to run the printer.
Yes, but this isn’t the netbook, this is another PC. Just the monitor comes from the netbook. The PC is a 2GB RAM Stick PC run an Atom Processor. I don’t say it will run the printer to where it is actually slicing. Rather, I can have it pull down the GCode and feed it to the printer. Haven’t tried it yet, but it doesn’t take much to do so. And if not, no reason something else can’t be hooked up to the monitor.
I like the idea of the more advanced interface, especially repetear host. But coastwise there can’t be too much difference between the stick pc and the SD display we use now. It would need to work better to justify changing. I’d like to know more about when you’re run it for a bit. ( all of this is ignoring the cool factor of it of which there is plenty)
I should have it on a printer after I update the BIOS on the thing and see how it goes. I am debating the Printrbot or the CX-7.
You know what is extra cool? I can get rid of the RF keyboard now and use my phone as the keyboard and mouse using Intel’s Remote Keyboard app. That is cool
@Samer_Najia - if you have an android phone, take a look at Unfied remote… My Pi Media Centre and TV are all controlled via my phone. I’ve not bloody clue where the actual TV remote is now
@Ax_Smith-Laffin , thank you for that. I do the same but this is Win-blowz so I am happy that works too
UR works on Winblows too. Not that I use it now, but have done in the past.
I will have to try it then
