Obviously it can. They have to pay bills. Is it worth it to pay less? Arguable. The value is certainly there for avoiding the hassle of sourcing the components yourself.

I agree

@ThantiK and don’t forget the founder would get rich

Depend on how much you value your hours…

Or like you could be somewhere shipping to is a challenge. BQ dont ship here so had to make my own ciclop. looking at how these guys operate and Tom’s reviews of these machines id have no problem buying one if i was going to buy one. I wouldn’t mind buying a electronics and possibly vitamins kit and building one. I’m someone that likes solving puzzles and building things.

I agree, It does not look to bad to build. I could take my time and print what I can with my simple metal printer than accumulate the other parts over time.

They quit selling KITTAZ kits a while back, a year or so at least. IIRC a KITTAZ is a TAZ3. Depending on where you source the parts it will be between $800 and a $1000 for that sort of design. What I would suggest you do instead of asking the questions about costs of the different models as DIY is to get the BOM and make a spreadsheet that contains cost and sourcing info. Because it’s not kitted and you’re sourcing raw parts, figure 20-40 hours of your time to get it up and going depending on your skill level.

@Brigham_Valdez I find your statement regarding price questionable. The quality of electronics, PSU, motors and hot end in the Luzbot machines cost more than $300 with good sourcing. Quality extrusions and motion parts alone will be more than $300.

A printer with inexpensive, entry level components can be built for around that price but something the quality and features of a Lulzbot cannot be built for $300.

@dstevens_lv depends on the volume. Volume discount on parts is quite high once you start ordering 10k of parts. I expect the BOM of the kit to be around 300-350.

For that price you can built far better printer than taz…if you know how. imho for 700-800 usd is needed for better printer

@dstevens_lv if you want to look up the cost of the BOM you can on http://devel.lulzbot.com. it’s one of my favorite parts of Lulzbot. If you know where you can look up exactly what your getting. The TAZ costs Aleph about 1k to build with their volume discounts. You can’t touch that price with thier suppliers and the quality components they use. Yes, you can build a TAZ for less, my makerspace built 10 for about 800 a piece. But using lesser components.

The KITTAZ wasnt even introduced a year ago and it is based off the TAZ 4. It was just recently discontinued.

I am talking about different type printer with same or better print quality. I am building one right now.

@Daid_Braam In this context it’s obvious one guy building a single printer. The capital requirements for a 10k run are pretty substantial.

@Brigham_Valdez Do you have a BOM and source for this TAZ clone that’s $300 for a one off build?

Like to start putting together a source of parts to build a TAZ 5

@Sebastian_Schmidt have you met the ceo? Because I have and having interviewed him, I know he doesn’t care about getting rich, he just wants users to have a lot of freedom.

+Brigham Valdez which version of taz? Because honestly they have excellent machines with really easy setup and they’ve gotten easier.

@dstevens_lv  if it’s a corexy, it’s not a taz clone.

It’s a growing company who actually care a lot about their users. The price may be steep, but it’s worth it. The mini has really high accuracy and does build leveling fairly well.

Disclaimer: I do consult for the company, but I own a taz 3 and a mini and they do not pay me to say good things about them.

Justin if I wanted to build my own Taz 5 with a cobination printed and purchased parts from the company would it be worth it?

@John_Car not in my experience. I built their dual extruder from scratch and had a lot of issues. The primary one has to do with bulk discounts. I still have 100s of parts from that project because I couldn’t just order 1. Another huge aspect is support. Buying a printer helps them do more development, but it also helps you because you have a really reliable machine and you’re supporting an open source company. They actually test every single printer before sending it out and their print cluster of 145 printers prints 24/5 so they’re well tested and they improve what breaks on the printers.

Justin, do they sell a printer kit of the TAZ 5?

No, they don’t. You could email and ask them why they don’t. It’s probably related to sort costs
