3D printing featured in new Disney film. I had a feeling it would come to this.

yeah but he’s obviously got some kind of awesome bit-addressable printhead that lets him deposit the material in one pass…I want that technology! Inkjet with plastic instead of ink…

@Mike_Miller ObJet :wink:

I think the worst part is that now whenever I tell people I do 3D modeling, they’re going to think of this.

@Daniel_ShadowDrakken Not without a big powdery mess! (or am I misunderstanding the process?)

@Mike_Miller objet appears to use free standing uv cured resin in their videos. They’re not very descriptive on their website. If you can find white paper on it though please share, I’d love to know for sure

Objet, pattern master, etc do use inkjet style heads

But there’s a huge pile of powder in and around the printed object while it’s happening, with nasty cleanup. I want the one in the movie where it prints it wholesale without cleanup.

I stand corrected: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRWBB0YzgNM

@Mike_Miller yeah and since Stratasys bought them out they’ve added multi-material printing as well. ObJet is just an amazing printer at this point… but it comes with a crazy pricetag reflecting that too :slight_smile:

The really cool example I saw with an Objet was printing a cordless drill prototype where the abs housing and rubber grip were printed at the same time. They have a whole line of rubbers with different durometer ratings - its an impressive and spendy machine. I think SLA will give you smoother results for mold making but the objet is hard to beat for multi-material.

Oh and that looks like an awesome movie!!
