Poor little lulzbot… Ripped right through the PEI sheet.
Always try to watch a good bit if not all of your first layer. Many different failures can happen there. Some costly like this.
I don’t have a Lulzbot (Printrbot Metal Plus), but I prefer thinner PEI than 2mm because the thermal resistance is so high. Maybe the TAZ has a more powerful heater than mine, but given then need to get the PEI top surface up to something like at least 60°C to get good adhesion, 2mm sounds like it’d make the heat up really slow.
My PEI is ~1mm thick and it has been virtually bullet proof. I’m surprised to see it destroyed like this. The only issue I’ve had is when printing TPU filament, where the adhesion to the PEI was so strong, I thought I was going to tear chunks out to get the print off. Fortunately I managed to avoid that, but it was a near thing.
