ABS Octopus before and after Acetone Vapor treatment.
Is there a way to get rid of the slimy look after smoothing ? Maybe sand tumbler or sand blasting ?
We were aiming for the shiny look - I think I’d try media blasting, or just printing at a lower layer height. Wife has used spray primer on some of the models she paints, and that works pretty well.
This is great!
How long was it in the vapor?
You can keep a lot more detail by taking longer on the acetone bath. Dip it for shorter periods of time, and let the acetone evaporate and redeposit the plastic. You want to have like 15 minute baths with an hour between drying out.
Nice :), I’m working in doing the same but with PLA
Am curious, what were your line height setting for this print?
@Yomi_Colledge ? With PLA? what are you using as a solvent?
I’ve not tried it with solvent yet. I’m currently working on improving the print quality ATM
You can use carburetor cleaner for PLA - but it’s not exactly the same result. Octo was printed at .2mm layers, and was in the vapor for about 2 minutes.
Ahh, cool, I had to knock mine up to .3 to keep the nozzle from touching the surface. Still need to work out how to get it back down to around .2.
I’ll check out that solvent, I was going to go to my local printing shop and see what technique there are using.
Ahh, sweet nice tip, I’ll give that a whirl. Cheers
Wow, that makes a world of difference! The after pic almost looks wet and slimy, like a real octopus!
@Yomi_Colledge Be careful with smoothing PLA; I understand that the solvents for PLA are generally way more dangerous than acetone.
@Carlton_Dodd cheers for the heads up
