ABS on Paper
I’m getting some really good results using paper as a base for ABS prints. It has a number of advantages in that its clean, cheap, most people have some nearby, it sticks really well and yet is easy to remove. The only downside is it doesn’t discourage warping. IE the paper just creases slightly as the print warps (as you can see in the photo). Not sure if thats to do with me not having my temps right or not though as ABS is new to me.
Oh I should probably say, be careful you don’t start any fires
Yeah, you’re gonna be close to the flashpoint for paper - right about 230ºC, according to some sources. (And Ray Bradbury.)
I did wonder… I didn’t get so much as mark on the paper except at the start of the warm up swipe where the head was stationary pressed against the paper I had a pin prick of brown.
I guess as long as you stand over it for the first layer you should be good since the bed isn’t anywhere near that temp.
You can hit the paper with a Boric Acid or Borax solution if you are concerned about fire.
I’m not really bothered personally, it didn’t seem to be an issue but I guess if you had some of the ABS that needs to be quite hot it could be.
Wonder what parchment paper (for baking) is good for?
@Mike_Miller It may be too smooth for this purpose. Worth a try.
Cool i have try this before but i have use other materiel PLA but have not HOLD very well but ABS its new must try this .
Awesome experiment thank you.
Let us know how you get on
PLA on paper works really well, too! There’s one Maker that’s been printing all sorts of cool things (lamps, airplanes) that incorporate paper into the design!
I wouldn’t worry about paper bursting into flames due to being printed on. The print bed never gets anywhere near as hot as the interior of the extruder, because it cools as it leaves the nozzle, so the paper’s not more than 100 degrees. Even if you leave the nozzle pressed against paper, nothing happens.
Cheers for the info @Laird_Popkin I did wonder if that was the case
Maybe construction paper will help with the warp. Or wetting then drying paper to make it stiffer, but hopefully not to brittle?
Isn’t printing on paper really closely related to printing on painters tape? I’m thinking you could just glue-stick the paper to the print bed to keep it from creasing. Well, you’d have issues getting the paper off of the print bed. Choose your battles.
Another thing to try is flat (non-glossy) sticker paper. For instance, I had some old CD labels that made for a good print surface. They stick to the print bed all over… but they still do warp a little.
The best I have tried is the 3M off mat sticker left from my car it works very well Way better than normal A4 paper , results very smooth service for the Print object, and easy to replace
