After a short break, I’m back with my latest project: Ducenti (Lux Phyllotaxis). It’s very similar to my last project (Fermat), but with twice as many LEDs! It’s an 11 inch stainless steel hemisphere with 200 8mm WS2811 RGB LEDs. It’s currently driven by a Teensy 3.2, but I’m planning to swap it out for an ESP8266 soon.

I’m using a SN74HCT245N level shifter, TSOP38238 IR receiver, 5V 10A power supply, etc.

Running code very similar to these projects:

Really looks great, I wonder what it would look like inside of a Chinese paper lantern for diffusion.

How do you even code these amazing patterns!
Simply awesome!

Great stuff!!

Great mapping and animations! I love it.

@DigitalJax Any idea where one would buy the flat paper for these?

@Sebastien_Letourneau Any art store will have something like that. Its called white tissue paper(not for blowing your nose in) same stuff you would use to flatten leaves into a book

Stefan and Jason have some incredible animations and projects.

Which pixels did you use? The bullet style? Or just the diffuse led on its own?

@Justin_Eastman I used 200 (4 strings of 50) 8mm WS2811, IP-33 (non-waterproof), like these: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/50pcs12mm-WS2811-2811-Pixel-node-String-Addressable-Module-Light-LED-Module-Non-waterproof-DC5V/1547858563.html

I"m wondering about that stainless steel sphere and how you measure the holes and then cut into it. Sounds hellish.

@Sebastien_Letourneau You can do it yourself with Google Sketchup plugin https://extensions.sketchup.com/es/content/flatten-faces

@Andrew_Tuline I made a papercraft template with the hole locations, then marked and drilled each hole. There are pics in the album for this and the last hemisphere I made of the process. Is that a mixing bowl from ikea?
