After half an hour of jams I put a tiny bit of canola oil on the end of my filament. It’s been 2 hours and no jams =D you can see the difference in print consistency in the bottom layers.
So you just dipped the end of filament in canola oil before inserting it into the extuder?
Ya, a very small amount. This is a relatively new extruder, only 30 or so hours of printing on it. I had checked everywhere for clogs and hadn’t found any. A friend of mine suggested the oil.
Are you printing in PLA?
Yep
hmm
I’ve heard some call this technique seasoning.
Yes, correct the E3D people call it seasoning. It really makes a huge difference in all metal hotends.
Thanks for sharing.
how often do you need to reapply the oil?
it started jamming after about 14 hours of printing so I reapplied this morning. 6 hours and no jams so far.
I’ve seen filament cleaning sponge used, with a drop of oil in the sponge to replenish the oil. That sponge would be in a case above the extruder drive, filament going through the sponge case. All dirt on filament would be wiped away with a very thin coat of oil added.
