After two years of use my fan in the bathroom has been self-destruct. I think this is a good opportunity to print a new turbine

nice - I suggest this is an opportunity to geek out a bit extra too: consider adding an autonomous function to enable the fan automatically when steam is present (e.g. when youâre in the shower) and to disable it automatically some minutes after all steam is evacuated.
a little wifi board (e.g. ESP8266 ~$3 online) and a free cloud service (e.g. Blynk.cc) could let you control and monitor it via your phone too, so non-steam related uses could be enabled easily.
@Jared_Eldredge what happens when you gotta shit?
@Jared_Eldredge This function is build in in this model
Without wifi of course.
@Kevin_Danger_Powers a few options:
- occupancy detection at the toilet; assume anyone occupying the toilet for more than ~30 seconds is dropping a deuce, else they are just watering the plants behind it
- pressure sensor on toilet seat
- use the wifi option to manually enable it (letâs face it, youâve got your phone with you)
- put a button on the wall for manually enabling the fan in parallel to autonomous function
@Daniel_Kusz ooo fancy! my ~20 year old fans are still running but with zero fancy features⌠i havenât looked into replacement fans in a while and didnât realize they came with such features out of the box these days.
gotta say thatâs a little disappointing: i like building stuff and itâs easier to justify when the âproductâ i want doesnât exist commercially (yet).
I understand you
Always, when you have a great idea, which will change the world, check Google before - it is there
Fortunately it is no rule and people still doing great new things.
I suspect a printed fan blade will void some kind of UL, CE, or fire safety type certification⌠Maybe use a flame-retardant filament like PETG to be safe?
@Kevin_Danger_Powers There are flammable gas sensorsâŚ
OMG, just buy a new one. Having a 3D printer doesnât mean you have to print everything
@Thomas_Chandra lol. Some people are serious about this hobby.
@Thomas_Chandra Ok, I will print next benchy.
Had a friend who was woken up by the fire-alarm the very first night he slept in his new apartment. The bathroom ceiling fan had an electrical issue and it had a plastic turbine which caught on fire. Burning plastic from the fan fell to the floor lighting the toilet seat on fire (plastic too) and the shower curtains (also plastic). So perhaps not the best idea to print the turbine out of something thatâll burn.
TLDR; Buy a new fan. Seriously.
@Johan_Jakobsson the original fan is already âsomething that will burnâ. Your friendâs issue was an electrical problem, not an issue with a printed fan.
In fact, better to have a plastic that burns without noxious fumes. So thatâs a reason to use pla
@Jared_Eldredge The original fan is made of metal which doesnât, afaik, burn.
My friends issue was that he had a cheap low quality fan made of plastic. (thanks mr landlord)
Seems stupid to repeat that error.
But hey, go for it. Make the fan out of plastic. If youâre really unlucky it could burn your house down. Than again, it might not.
@Johan_Jakobsson look at that image in the op. That didnât look like a metal fan to me. My bathroom ventilation is also plastic right now in all three of my bathrooms.
