“Alas poor v5, I knew you well.” - Prince Omlette, Act 5, Scene 1

After 10 months and countless kilometers of plastic of both grand and questionable lineage, my extruder has finally failed.

I blame a heavy handed application of Kapton as the ultimate cause, plus too many initial print layers that didn’t stick, curled around the nozzle, and wicked up the tape.

I pulled the nozzle (extrusion appeared clogged) and burned it out to clean it, along with a soak in MEK…the Kapton tape was a crusty, crinkly, mess, and the heat break could not be removed from the heat block, even with head and MEK applied. Too much carbon build up.

I considered posting the last photo, asking you what you all thought of my new hot-end and throwing out terms like ‘boson impregnated heat isolators’ and ‘wave displacement sonic heaters’ and ‘kickstarter coming soon!’…but knowing the cultural makeup of this group, I didn’t want people to take that seriously.

So, a V6 is on it’s way, and I’ll most likely reuse most of this on my son’s printer, eventually, but it’s what I was messing with this weekend.

Looks to me you just need a new heater and thermistor.

Might be worth trying to find something that actually dissolves carbon? What to use seems to be a subject of debate. Your Google results may vary. (Lots of gun/auto sites seem to have arguments…er…info on this subject.)
Or a stronger(‘nastier’) plastic solvent, such as methylene chloride.

I’ve got the heat break cleaned out, I figure a new nozzle, and tap for a screw to retain the next thermistor and it’ll be useable. It just doesn’t owe me anything and is NASTY based on my learning experiences.
