Almost finished assembling the Toranado 2.1.

Almost finished assembling the Toranado 2.1. I printed it with heat sensitive PLA to see what the heat distribution is like when printing with it. When cold it is this bluish color. When warmed up it turns to “natural” color. I’ll be posting a video of the results soon.

Very cool.

What is the infill percentage?, because that’ll play a big part in heat distribution.

15%

There’s also the fact that it starts changing color around 30C. Not that high considering the temperatures we print out. I’m curious to see how far up the color change goes and how much of an effect the cooling fan has on keeping the temperature down. Will have to see when I finally get it mounted and running, hopefully sometimes tomorrow.

At what temperature does the temperature sensitive pigment saturate? It’s usually low enough that it’s hard to use it for anything interesting.

It’ll be an interesting experiment nonetheless.

Here’s video showing first result. Heat sensitive PLA worked better than I expected.

Interesting heat pattern during first print:

Nice experiment. How do you like the extruder design overall?

I’ve only done one print with it so far but also so far it is performing very well. My only concern is the weight of it for my type of printer (Cobblebot). It protrudes from the rail enough to put a little strain on the rail. It was designed with the Prusa type printer in mind with a stationary axis.
