Almost there, but not yet! Find out what makes the bq Witbox a good and not-so-good 3D printer.

Nice review, teardown would have been a great addition.

I like that he doesn’t pull any punches. I wonder if manufacturers will hesitate sending him printers because of this fact. I hope not but one does wonder ;). Reviewers like this are badly needed but I would imagine it’s hard to find (free / borrowed)!units for testing.

Cheers
Brook

Another excellent video! Thanks for an honest review. Now the ball is in bq’s court to fix the issues and try again… patents included.

I dig the shoutout to @Whosa_whatsis , represent. We need more of this, good work @Thomas_Sanladerer

As long as i get new printers I’ll send them forwards to Tom. Incl. a Sixpack whenever needed and fresh pla :wink:

@Alberto_Valero_Gomez

Thanks Thomas! I really appreciate your honest review. Mainly all of the technical bq stuff came from the community (I included). We all know that problems, specially the patent issue. We really believe in open hardware and sharing information. Patents build walls. I will work on solving that, as well as the rest of issues.

Great review Thomas!

@Florian_Horsch_flouS  send a Delta!

@Nils_Hitze it’s not my business anymore :-/ But I could ask Joachim Schmidt from Piccos3Dworld. Would really love to see @Thomas_Sanladerer testing the Pharao delta printer… it looked so perfect.

Great work as always, @Thomas_Sanladerer

Regarding the printer it’s so annoying to see some of the big mistakes over and over again. It looks like at least some of the biggest could have been avoided without raising the budget.

I still wonder what a printer would be like if a few of us guys would build it together :slight_smile:

@Helmi SO TRUE!

In this context I closely follow the work of @Nectar_3D (with @Richard_Horne on board). I really hope it will be a best-practice device in any terms.

Right now Zortrax seems to do it best for a First Try

@Brook_Drumm i was wondering about that as well (by the way, Apple does just that with their annual iPhone releases), but then again, any review should be an honest one.
Ethics in 3D printing journalism…
@Ben_Van_Den_Broeck thank you.
@Juan_Gonzalez_Gomez i have high hopes for the next 3D printer you make.
@Florian_Horsch_flouS i’d have to do a DeltaTower review outside. My workshop is too small to fit it in there! Pharao will probably be tested early next year.
I’m sure @Richard_Horne is doing his best on steering Nectar in the right direction.
@Helmi collaborate on the next “official” RepRap?
@Nils_Hitze the Zortax is an impressive machine, perhaps a bit too closed-down for my liking. Maybe next year i’ll borrow one from @iGo3D .

If love @Thomas_Sanladerer 's take on one of the more popular Deltas (SeeMeeCnc?), if only to see if his experiences mirrored mine. In 10 months effort, I could get it to print, but I was never really happy with the results, and couldn’t say it was ever dimensionally dialed in.

I suspect part of it was that my printer was 1 of 1…if there were more eyes on the situation, I could see that generating better calibration.

Thomas, you are doing a great job. I do think you could use someone to collaborate with… No one person can have perfect ideas every time. In watching your reviews, they haven’t been perfect (but close). Having someone vet your work may improve the final results.

Maybe I’m a soft American but your style can be a bit harsh at times. You are light hearted enough at other times on balance but reviewers need to be trusted and if your tone sounds biased, you may lose trust. It’s ok to have opinions as long as you acknowledge them as such- not fact.

Since you are relying on review units to be sent free of charge, you can’t have manufacturers fear your reviews or they won’t send (maybe the fearless will).

The bq review, in my opinion, was mostly negative. I want to encourage your work, so I didn’t say so earlier. You did have good things to say but overall I think it may have appeared like you enjoy pointing out the flaws and don’t enjoy finding bright spots in the product. This is an isolated case though I think. I think reviews are a delicate art and sometime when I’m doing them, I have to soften the extent of my true feelings so that the point can be received. Great advice falling on deaf ears is no advice at all. Btw: kudos to bq for such a graceful reception.

I chose to make this public because A) I’m a fan and B) I want to go on record as being one of those fearless manufacturers that welcome reviews of all kinds- even though I sound a bit soft here and C) I really hope you can make a business out of it and keep doing it.

I made an assumption-- are you trying to make a business out of it? What is the business model?

Anyway, you are a bright spot in the community. Thanks again for your work.

The irony of a manufacturer reviewing a product reviewer is not lost on me!! HA!

All the best,

Brook

Hey @Brook_Drumm1 - not trying to speak for @Thomas_Sanladerer but just wanted to say that the reception of his tonality or level of criticism might indeed has to do with a difference of “usual criticism” level between Germany and the US. You Americans tend to be much friendlier in these things as we are - at least cases like this where he truly tries to be honest and transparent to the community . As i think to know that Tom isn’t directly planning to make a business out of this (he might tell different stories later - my view is more or less an impression) i think he’s doing a good job in beeing on a more critical level than the usual “reviews” which in lot cases aren’t reviews but more or less Public Relation posts.

I completely agree with you.

I am not well-travelled enough to have knowledge of cultural nuances but did expect this to be a factor.

If it truly is a community thing- then I like him even more because of the obvious time involved!

If it is a passion that could move to a profession, I think he has the talent to do it.

Thanks for your input
Brook

We should definitely all go out for an intercontinental reprap beer or two
