An update on the CubeJet full color 3D printer that was announced by @3D_Systems at CES 2014. I had a chance to talk with the Product Manager, Tara Anderson about where it’s at and when we can expect to see it released.
It was nice to see it actually running at this show, last year it was just an empty shell.
There isn’t a lot of point in 3D printing in full colour with plaster (gypsum). The finished result is extremely fragile - it would probably break apart easily if handled and certainly would not survive being dropped.
This is an acceptable technology for making artwork that sits on a shelf for display purposes, but the mechanical properties of gypsum are very much poorer that the thermoplastics used in FDM printers.
Agreed. This type of 3D printing is primarily used in architecture models and early stage conceptual prototypes. Definitely not the best choice for functional prototypes.
