L6470 looks like an awesome driver for cnc
SPI communication
Tracks motion
User jog input ability - which also mean it has its own internal clock.
Micro stepping up to 128
programmable speed and accel decel profiles…
This chip could use some serious open source attention IMO.
Interesting… ok so if spi is a pain what about the manual injection or step and direction?
The internal counter for position and many other features would be very handy.
I don’t want to be a pest I’m just curious.
The thought of the MCU providing ‘GOTO’ commands to any number of drivers is very intriguing and the thought of position tracking being handled remotely saving processing power of MCU for other tasks… idk interesting ideas that i don’t currently have time to explore.
interesting to note but as i read thru the documents i see the accel deccel min and max speed are saved to a register not auto tuned. The part I find interesting is the ability to set the micro steps on the fly. Also the driver can be supplied with a direction and number of micro steps to travel. So the pulse handling is driven off MCU. Now if synchronization is a concern i see the chip can also be fed a clock externally and not rely on the internal one and intern supply the same clock signal to each driver. i suppose then you’d have to fight signal trace length issues as well…
+Peter van der Walt the picservo sc http://www.jrkerr.com/icproducts.html takes step and direction and supports brushed and brushless dc motors with encoders. It’s a little pricey at around 30 dollars but it’s a nice part, just needs the h-bridge for driving the motor. I saw some talk on the reprap forum about the guy who developed the original ic was thinking about making a striped down version with h-bridge that would fit in the normal socketed stepper motor socket and support brushed motors with encoders.
