Any people try to use cork(from wine bottle for example) for hotend insulator?
I have a feeling this will smoulder quite a bit… just hazarding a guess without looking up facts of course.
yes cork carbonize with flame…but no find any information how many celsius need for start this process.
Great link David! Thanks!
I gave this a go a while back. The cork started to char before the hotend reached it’s target temperature of 200degC. It’s a shame because the thermal properties of cork looked to be quite appealing.
I had more luck with bamboo (http://garyhodgson.com/reprap/2011/05/bamboo-as-alternative-to-peek-or-ptfe/), and still use it today as I find it doesn’t jam as much as PEEK or PTFE.
If you can compact the cork or bamboo and char the volatile chemicals away then you end up with graphite that can withstand up to 450°C and is a good thermal insulator
I use cuttlefish bone ( cuttlebone) . Very effective insulator and available at pet shops
