Anybody here have any experiences how strong Nema 17 stepper? (Especially for 17HS8401) … Is Nema 17 feasible to drive 3 ballscrew 12mm? Please share it, if you have any experiences, I need it for reference before buy it.

There isn’t enough information there. There’s the weight the screws have to move, how much gravity does it have to fight and at what mechanical advantage the screws have. But if you need to run three screws, then you might have enough weight to need a NEMA 23 motor.

@Jeff_DeMaagd I’m trying to collect the previous experiences from this group, so I can have the picture about how strong the nema17 is, in other words, I’m looking for other case studies so I can compare with my design, nema 23 is what across on my head before but I’m not sure if that overkill to drive 3 ballscrew 1204, but thanks for your comment

You can try to find photos of the Fusion3 F306. I think they use three screws belted from one motor but I can’t tell for sure what motor size they used. I think it would work, within reason. I would still try to design in an upgrade path to NEMA23 just in case NEMA17 size motors don’t work out.

Same thought, I provide some space for nema 23 in case nema 17 is insufficient strength to drive the ballscrews

More in depth on the Z screws

@Jeff_DeMaagd Thanks for links, I saw several videos about Z like that, most of them using the nema 17 without problems and they are not using ballscrew instead they are using leadscrew,so I want to make sure again if in this group already have experiences and maybe there is a catch that I have to know or maybe a problem. My Z configuration very similar with more XY with a tension on motor and using nema 17 also

NEMA 17 is probably fine for 1204 unless the ball screw nuts are really stiff or the Z stage is extremely heavy. I’d be more worried about 1210.

Nice thing about Z stage design is that you can always add more pulley gear ratio reduction if you need to, and the reduced top speed isn’t a big deal. For example, if you have problems with the 1204 screws, you can put a 2:1 reduction ratio pulley stage in there (like a 16t pulley on the motor and 32t pulleys on the screws) and get twice the torque at the screws.

@Ryan_Carlyle “For example, if you have problems with the 1204 screws, you can put a 2:1 reduction ratio pulley stage in there (like a 16t pulley on the motor and 32t pulleys on the screws) and get twice the torque at the screws.” … Thanks Ryan … This is what I’m looking for … Anyway my assumption is, because the ballscrew is less friction than leadscrew so the Nema 17 can drive very easily eventhough the motor have to drive 3 ballscrew 1204 connected with belt … please CMIIW … And how about the accuration if I’m doing the gear reduction? As far as I know the gear reduction is only mentioning about the speed reduction and torque increment thing
