Anybody know where I can get Aluminum Extrusion (like 80/20 stuff) inexpensively?  The cheapest

Anybody know where I can get Aluminum Extrusion (like 80/20 stuff) inexpensively? The cheapest I’ve found is at Reid Supply, but the shipping on pieces longer than 96" is HORRIBLE because it has to be shipped via commercial freight…

EDIT: This is in the States. I live in Portland, Oregon. (sorry for my provincial assumptions! lol)

Full Disclosure: I work for http://inventables.com

@Edward_Ford - thanks! But unfortunately, the inventables extrusion is too small a cross-section for my application. :frowning: My CNC is quite large and needs 1.5"x4.5" cross-section extrusion…with a 108" length…

We just picked up a bunch cheaply from eBay.

Mitsumi is by far the cheapest and they will cut for you

I should also say, if you are for supporting the community - inventables is the way to go.

Thanks for the inventables love!

Regarding the OP: You might want to check misumi then. In their 5 series of extrusions you can get up to 40mm x 80mm, which would get you roughly 1.5" x 3+". Or, if you went up to their 6 series, you could get a 50mm x 100mm at the length you require (2743.2mm).

Their part numbers are wonky, but I think you are looking for HFS6-50100-2743

Their standard cuts are promised to be +/- 1mm, so your .2mm might be an issue unless you request the “high precision” cut… .which is pricey.

Anyway, good luck with the build!

Thanks Everyone! You guys are great (and Inventables is great too).

80/20 sells scratch and dent items on ebay at http://stores.ebay.com/8020-Inc-Garage-Sale

@Eric_Edwards - thanks! I was looking for their mythical “garage sale” page on their website. Didn’t know it had migrated over to their ebay page.

Amazon.com has the entire 80/20 catalog though I don’t know how the price compares. Grainger sells it, along with mcmaster-carr as well.

The problem I have encountered is getting pieces longer than 96"…

@Daniel_Joyce - thanks. I’ve checked out all those but they all are expensive and/or don’t carry long lengths… :-/

There are some folk on Kickstarter that have had success in manufacturing and selling stuff a little cheaper than normal industrial prices/

Grainger has long pieces. It you have a local branch you could save the freight, so even with the higher price it might be cheaper. Your company might have a Grainger account already and they might let you use it if you pay cash at pickup, or you might qualify for one of Grainger’s deals. I’m a couple hundred miles from the nearest office, but they’ll free ship to me because I’m a Farm Bureau member - even one piece that comes truck freight. Won’t hurt to check them out.

Thanks everyone. I decided to just shorten my table to 7ft so that all the parts are 96" or shorter. Saves me several hundred in freight charges…
