Someone posted on the Marlin Firmware Github page about working on a Marlin version that runs on it. Work in progress.

ESP3D works well. It’s not a standalone motion controller but it’s a great web interface!

Given that Klipper firmware can eek out some crazy motor control timings on the old 8-bit hardware, I think an ESP32 could probably pull it off.
