Anyone have some ideas on what is happening with my prints? When I print something with overhangs, it starts to look really bad. I did some overhang test and attached are the results. I have a DaVinci 1.0a with their stock firmware. I am using Slic3r to generate the gcode files. The side with the supports looks ok, but the other side is bad. Without the supports it is also warping up.
I am using ABS for this. I usually have the perimeters set for 2 horizontal and 3 vertical. I tried increasing it to 6 for all, but that didn’t do any better. Infill is set at 20%.
Widen the extrusion width a little, and lower layer heights. Overhangs like those tend to drop loops if the next layer doesn’t have enough support from the layer below. It’s called the step over rate. Also slow things down and drop the temps a bit.
Let us know how things turn out with those sort of changes.
I sometimes get things that look like that if I use 0.1mm layer height. My Da Vinci does not seem to like 0.1, but works fine with 0.2 or 0.3mm. I haven’t experimented with Slic3r yet. I just don’t use 0.1mm
Yea, the black color is the filament burning. It only happens on overhangs. I have been trying some of the ideas here and it has gotten better changing the width. But the weird thing is the 15, 40 and 45 degree overhangs look good, but the others have the burning. Not sure why those would have that.
I wonder if the filament burns when it warps up and contacts the hot end. But if you can, start by dialing your temp down manually until the extruder won’t extrude any more, to establish some numbers. It’s possible your thermistor is way off. Also, check the temp on your bed if you can. The layers on both sides seem happier once they’re away from the bed.
