Are there any large printbed reprap projects? My 3dOne design should scale but I’m sure Ill need to beef things up substantially. would be interested to see how others have done it to learn from them before going that big. I’m thinking a 1,2m x 1,2m bed if feasible.
That is certainly a substantial bed size. The Beast is about a half meter cube build volume and kit builders are lamenting the flex caused by having to use supplied acrylic joining pieces. Some are fabricating aluminum replacements or sourcing alternative joining methods.
You’re in a TOTALLY different world with 1200mmx1200mm print area. Nothing you do in a standard size RepRap works anymore. The closest somewhat “easy” option is a Printerbot BigE.
You are aware about the scale-time issue aren’t you? A 20mm calibration cube might take 20 mins to print with a boggo FDM 3d printer.
Scale it up to a metre (with the same layer height and nozzle size) and it’d take litterally months to print. You need radically different extruders and hot ends to squirt out enough plastic to work on the metre scale at anything like reasonable time scales.
It’s fair to say that most printers of the humongous variety also have large nozzles, one millimeter diameter and up, allowing for faster print speeds. One would not use a monster size printer for a 20 mm cube, but might perform a similar test with a 100 mm cube with a 1 mm nozzle.
Check out the MPCNC there’s a 3d printer mod for it.
Would need to be 2.8mm filament and a 1mm nozzle. I’ve put a 0,8mm nozzle on one of my printers and the time difference in printing is substantial, vs 0,4mm its not for ultra smooth prints but to make larger objects quickly. But for example I printed a socket like that to undo a nut in a gas tank. needed it once wasn’t about to spend $$$ on buying one.
