@Autodesk is killing it these days. This might just be the most efficient support generator to date.

@Thomas_Sanladerer Looks neat, i think i need to give it a try!
Is this OpenSource?
Wow. That is very smart.
Nice
@Klemen_Zhivko Nope, but free to use.
I’m gonna call it here and now; Autodesk buying Ultimaker. We’ll see if my prediction comes true. =D
It’s either that or they build their own brand of machine…
I keep getting surprised by all the modeling apps they’ve borged. Had no idea they owned 3ds or Maya till recently.
I am testing it right now on a big print of a head. The software crashes a lot on Mac though.
@Peter_Parnes yeah, that seems to be a general thing with Autodesk’s products - 123D catch is everything but reliable for me as well.
Wow this looks neat! Wonder how well it actually works once printed.
Also call me paranoid, but big companies like Autodesk doing free stuff is very likely full of ulterior motives…
@ThantiK that would be horrible ! Goodbye OpenSource, hello to over expensive licences etc . Cool free tech or not , I have not forgotten what they have done to a number of 3d software I used to love.
Actually didn’t they already buy Makerbot (or was it 3D systems that bought them)
@Greg_Morgan stratasys bought makerbot. But I expect that AutoDesk is going to make a move soon.
Anthony, I agree. I think they will make a move soon.
@Mark_Moissette_ckaos yeah I got that 123catch app then thought about them taking the rights to my models
so I never used it.
Autodesk buying a hardware company seems unlikely to me, particularly since they haven’t released any printer control or slicing software. I think there’s a lot more money in it for them to be the company that makes 3d printer content creation accessible to the masses while staying hardware neutral.
@Ben_Malouf I dunno, they are kinda running out of software products to acquire that don’t replicate a product in their existing portfolio. If they bought Ultimaker, they would get Cura too so that would sort the slicing engine problem. It would then also make them the only players with a full end to end Concept-Design-Slice-Prototype workflow. Things like this support generation actually point in that direction anyway as it’s most useful if you can tweek the printer’s layer and temp settings at the interface between supports and model to maximise the ease at which the supports snap away.
Autodesk buying Ultimaker would be an extremely bad thing for open source (or for 3D printing in general). Autodesk is anything but open. It’s no accident no open source software can read/write DWG or DXF more recent than R2000, the file format spec is undisclosed. They’ve been to the USPO to patent the DWG acronym, and are continuously suing someone at any given time. Autodesk is a corporate bully.
Nice work dude !
