Been quiet for some time. Just got my printer so ive been busy getting it setup. What filaments do you guys use to diffuse LEDs?
I almost exclusively print with ABS, and I use a diffuse clear filament from Adafruit for the things I want shine through. At 2mm, it’s still nearly see through, so it doesn’t do exactly what I want.
I have used thin white (< 2mm thick) to some success, but it tends to just show some diffuse color, way too much diffusion actually.
It’s a tough call. It’s really a wall thickness problem honestly. Thin shows more no matter the color. White and clear give off color better. Testing a lot helps. I’ve printed about 90% waste to test ideas. Good thing filament isn’t the most expensive thing.
I’ve used PLA the most. It’s easy to print at lower temps, with less warping issues than ABS. PLA is weaker, less flexible, more brittle though. Not usually a problem for non structural parts.
Lately I’ve been trying PETG. It’s easier than ABS, and stronger than PLA. Requires higher temps than PLA though.
Completely agree with Peter. I use thin white for diffusion, thick natural/clear/translucent for structural. I haven’t done as much with printed LED stuff as I’d like, but hope to do more soon. I’m working on improving my 3D modelling skills.
Well i have no 3D modeling skills what so ever lol. All i have right now is silver PLA that came with my Prusa i3 MK2S
And some blue flexible filament
I normally use transparent ABS, it comes out like this. I get nice diffusion with it 5mm thick and spaced at least 5mm from the LEDs. You need to play with thickness and spacing to get the desired effect

I like clear PTEG. The stuff from eSun works great at 235C. If you don’t want to model anything and want to get blinking relatively fast, this star is pretty cool. It uses the standard bullet pixels.
