Calling all Simplify3D owners (and potential buyers)

There is the beginning of a small campaign to try to get Simplify3D to fix their broken DRM. Please take a look at the linked Reddit post. If you agree that their DRM system is not acceptable, then please send them an email with the link to the Reddit post.
For your convenience: licensing@simplify3d.com , support@simplify3d.com

In a nutshell, the most reasonable solution to the DRM issue is for them to remove the cap on the number of resets you can do, via their website. This solution would allow them to keep the DRM, but prevent the users from being locked out of their software for days, while waiting for their support to respond.

Hey! @Simplify3D , you care to chime in and explain why it takes days for a manual reset and/or why you won’t remove the cap? I would love to hear it!

I feel sorry for you but I have never had an issue. Even after killing a machine without deactivating through software. I run ubuntu trusty.

I likewise have no issue and I am on Windows 10. How about moving the install to a completely different machine and registering/activating there? I have been using S3D for about 2 months now on 2 different printers connected to the same PC.

Also never had an issue and I’ve reinstalled windows multiple times. Seems like very specific set of circumstances had to occur for this issue to come up.

@Daniel_Fielding@Samer_Najia@Jon_S I ran for over a year with no issues, too. The problem is that it is still happening and they won’t tell me what triggers it, so I can’t troubleshoot the problem.
Of they would simply fix their policy, so I can reset the activation myself, I would not be complaining, but getting locked out and having to wait days for them to reset the activation is just ridiculous.
Since I can’t troubleshoot the problem, I am very hesitant to use the software. I don’t wasn’t to get all set up and then have to wait days to do the actual print. I would rather just use other software. What a waste of $150.

?? No problem on mine, I still love it…

Hmm… I didn’t tell everyone to avoid GM or Ford when I got a flat tire… Inconvenient yes, but work it out and don’t be a whiner. Unless you just have buyers remorse? Give the support time to fix it. It’s not like it makes your 3d printer impossible to use while they try and figure something out. You can still use the various open source software’s out there that you are advocating as a replacement.

Or…

Maybe it’s something specific to that license…

Maybe you can ask them for a new license key if the other has issues. They should be able to with propper email proof etc, and then they can tag out the old license in case it’s been accessed by a third party somehow. (Hackers?)

Print on!

@Nathan_Walkner marginally agree, there are ways to do tracking DRM, that doesn’t directly hurt the customer. But the “if DRM breaks then you can’t use our stuff” model only hurts the customer. Cracking most DRM only takes some creativity and a few days/weeks.

And now you have the crack (admitted in Redit) so you want you 150 back… Classic. Squeak little wheel, squeak.

oh, that was red somebody’s comment, not random somebody’s comment about the crack… Hard to keep track with different user names… But still don’t advocate finding cracks, that is the crap that resulted in DRM in the first place.

@Stephen_Shimatzki easy mistake, no problem. However, I am not wanting my money back, I want to use this otherwise great software. And I don’t have a crack, I was looking, but never found one.
I would rather they fix their policy, which would fix the problem for everyone.

@Stephen_Shimatzki Also, there have been reports by other users with the same issue, going back 2 years. So it is a problem they know about, but choose to ignore, not just a matter of giving them time to fix the issue.

When you pay a premium price, it’s only natural to expect premium performance. Can you imagine how you would feel if the software license, for the ignition control computer in your car, kept you from driving it several times a month? I doubt if anyone would put up with that or that the solution would be to keep a couple of spare cars just for those occasions… If their DRM is bad, they need to know about and then they need to fix it!

@Alan_Thomason Well stated!
