Can someone give me ideas as to what might be causing the banding in the middle.
Any chance you threw ice into the bucket around that time?
Nope. Same water throughout the job without any additions. Using 5 gallons of distilled water in a bucket.
I edited the image to just B/W and used 10% power and 75mm/s. Still have a small band but getting better.
It’s cute.
The original used more shades of gray but I was having trouble getting the various shades to show up so I flattened it to B/W.

Possibly the density of that wood?
most likely a difference in the thickness of layers at transition areas. its all about the plywood, reducing or slightly increasing power level to balance out sometimes helps reduce this.
