I am wondering about using the smoothieboard for my next build as i like its scalable architecture.
As i am using it as a laser / 3d printer with the relevant safety precautions, i was wondering about the S0 comamd when specifying the laser intensity. the documentation says that G1 moves turns the laser on while G0 Turns It off.
ex. G1 X10 F100 S0
Question: for the following command above, even though my laser is on, if it has no intensity, is it still practically on?
Next question…As for the 3d Printer Side of Things,
If i specify say G1 X10 F100 E5 in my code:
a. Will that still turn on my Laser as its a G1 “turn on laser” Code or does it have to specify the S paremeter still?
B. My noobnes says to me if i don’t specify either the E(command) or S(command), it should just move,
G1 X10 S0 will not turn the laser ON
G0 X10 S1 will not turn the laser ON
S is the intensity when turned ON, if that intensity is 0, it is not turned ON.
By the way : this should not matter so much, you should have a machine that is fully enclosed if you are using a laser. Don’t play with your eyes, you only have two.
i just wanted to make sure that when the case is open and i am adjusting things for 3d printing, i don’t suddenly go blind with a G1 Move. I think the Documentation should be further clarified.

Well, you will if you forget to turn the laser off with a S0 parameter.
So the only safe way to do this, is to make sure you have full enclosure, and have an endstop on the door of the machine that turns the laser off if the door is opened. Any less secure than this would be very dangerous.
