Comparing Slic3r and Cura with the same print at same specs Cura puts out a much nicer print with virtually no cleanup.
This for me is one of those,- why didn’t i try this before - things.

IIRC, Cura only really somewhat recently became friendly enough to work with Reprap electronics. I’m only just now switching over as well, and I’m usually on the breaking-edge of things.
Can you be more specific in regards of “nicer”? (e.g. ripples, hangover, blurbs etc) and what you think why it is producing “nicer” prints?
Is Cura better at not filling in holes?
This post prompted “Experimentation Sunday” for me! Today, a 3-way shoot-out: Slic3r, KISSlicer, and Cura. Each exported g-code will be loaded into Repeteir-Host, and fed to my PrintrBot Simple.
I’ll try to do a post with my results.
My vote here goes to kisslicer, reprap magazine had an interesting article on the subject
Nicer prints as i see it. The walls are smoother with no missed or offset layers. The little blobs of plastic at the start or end of a line are gone or 85% less. Printing vertical letters on a bracelet such as " A " or " D " the inside portion of the letter is intact and legible. The stringy or 85% gone.
I to started on Slic3r and liked it but glad i have now tried Cura. Maybe these things may not hold true for all prints but the few i have tried were better. The fit of parts such as a puzzle pieces fit much better with Cura, with Slic3r there was always a big clean up and whittling the parts down to fit.
I have looked at Kiss for the same reason but haven’t been able to give it enough time yet. Maybe going from Cura to Kiss as it is going from Slic3r to Cura. Don’t know. I will get to someday.
@John_Ridley I’m with you on all counts.
I’m only relatively new to 3D printing, having only had mine for about a month. I’ve got a Printrbot Plus V2. I followed the instructions and got a great Calibration cube, however when printing other objects I had issues with infill and top layers with holes using slic3r, which prompted me to look for alternatives. KISSlicer was on the list, but then I saw someone mention Cura.
The first, second and third print from Cura just worked. The number of inbetween movements/travel seemed to be MUCH less. My only gripe with Cura is the estimated print time being out.
I’ve read more about slic3r and G-Code in general since moving over to Cura. I will give slic3r another go (I am using it still for vase type prints), but I’m happy with Cura for the moment.
FWIW, I’ve loaded up KISS but agree with the others above, the interface feels clunky and doesn’t look as ‘clean’.
@Wayne_Friedt you know the saying: pics or it didn’t happen
@John_Ridley LOL at dog’s butt. It’s even uglier on Linux, I posted screen captures on G+.
My cam is on a sigh seeing trip for couple of days. Just use your imagination,ha
I have also switched to Cura from Slic3r since august. Results are “nicer”. I feel like a difficulty setting printed filament width correctly with Slic3r while with Cura nothing to tweek there and result is good. Not only nicer Cura is easier but lack of some possibilities in settings. Maybe good for still dummies like me
I tried the switch this morning with my Mendel90 - couldn’t get a valid print start with my mendel90. M82 in start gcode to force relative extrusion seemed to make things buggy. Start gcode is also run after warming the printer up, which I don’t like. Any advice? The one reprap forum post I found on using cura with the mendel90 is out of date…
