My impression, APA102 is a little brighter and noticeably less flickery at low levels. Definitely noticeable in filming
I wanted to also add that FastLED made it super easy to do a parallel test like this. The hardest part was finding out the color ordering for each of the strips.
The APA102 strip I bought was BGR
the WS2812 I bought was GRB

Also: dang it’s hard to video these things!
You got that right @Mark_Kriegsman This was shot with my phone.My Nikon D90 supposedly has a nice video mode, but it’s really hard to adjust the video settings (unlike the photography settings)
