Continuing the Christmas theme.

Continuing the Christmas theme. After seeing the Christmas lights sketch a few days ago we just had to make a Christmas tree. Thanks @Mark_Kriegsman !

Looks good! Any build details and pics you can share?

@Jason_Coon I’d be embarrassed to share pictures of how this thing is put together! But I’ll give you a run down…

First we made an A frame shape with a few bits of 3/4" wide, 1/2" thick bits of wood, nothing special. Nailed together poorly, the top is actually held together with a cable tie. The wood was cut to about 5ft long roughly.

We then put a couple of long pieces from the peak down to about 1/4 the width from each edge at the bottom to give us some more places to hang LEDs from.

We then strung up 50x WS2801 LEDs I had knocking around, they were the sort with the big rectangular silicone wedges on a string. Hot glued these to the wooden frame and the supports. Loads of hot glue everywhere to try and get most of them to point forwards.

Made a small bit of wood across the top of the frame on which to sit the Arduino Uno which is cable tied into place. More hot glue to hold an extension cable to the frame, which was then given some support with another cable tie at the top of the A. The entire thing hangs off this extension cable which is tacked into the rail at the top of the room with some push pins. Simple 1A usb supply is plugged into the extension and wired to the arduino to power the whole thing. I can just about get to this cable to reprogram it.

The entire thing was then wrapped in some white fluffy material that my wife had knocking about, this was literally masking taped into place so we didn’t have to ruin the material and held at the top with a safety pin.

I then 3d printed a plastic star and drilled some holes in the back to fit one of the LEDs into. This was…yep you guessed it…hot glued into place!

By far my most bodged together project in a while, but its pretty!

Don’t be embarrassed, it looks better than anything I’ve built. Thanks for the info!

@Jason_Coon Fluffy material hides a lot

Simplicity works. Visually that pattern is extremely good and effective.
Must steal it
