Could someone with solidworks add duplicate holes to the horizontal axis of this spool

Could someone with solidworks add duplicate holes to the horizontal axis of this spool mount? The OP only supports vertical mounting when I need horizontal & don’t have access to solidworks.

Shouldn’t be tough to do, but it’d really be appreciated.

You could do this with a tool like Tinkercad or 123D Design. They’re clumsy, but effective.

Do they read IGS files?

Probably not, but I figured for a quick and functional edit you could import the stl file.

That’s true, I have an stl importer in sketchup if anything. It’s just gonna be choppy. Thanks

If I had Solidworks, I’d have offered to actually help. I’m just dabbling in 123D myself.

Here ya go: https://www.dropbox.com/s/slssqdablycgdwq/Spool_Holder_vert.STL
God damn it, i’m in love with Solidworks. That was literally a one-minute job, including import, feature detection, adding the extra holes and exporting it as a clean stl.

Oh wow haha, thanks @Thomas_Sanladerer ! Want me to add it to this thingiverse submission?

@Thomas_Sanladerer I agree… SolidWorks is the bomb. I’ve been using it for about 10 years now and I’ve tried to use some of the other free modeling programs just to see how they work and nothing compares to the ease of manipulation you have with SolidWorks.

@Ben_Van_Den_Broeck feel free to use that file in every way you see fit!

Is there anyway to get solid works for free without pirating it?

@Ben_Van_Den_Broeck if you’re a college / university student, you might be elegible for the free Student Edition, which is a way stripped-down version. Students also have the option to purchase proper single-year licenses for about a hundred bucks.
Other than that, i don’t know of another way that would make Solidworks legally available to “common folk”.
As a legal disclaimer, piracy is not endorsed, promoted or tolerated by me or any other community member.

Yea we have a policy at our workshop to not use pirated software so I had to ask.

It’s the reason I haven’t bothered with the multi-hundred/thousand dollar packages. Unlike when I was a penniless teenager, I have money now, and feel guilty about piracy. The thinking in my teenage years was the piracy wasn’t a lost sale, because what was I going to buy it with, anyway? These days, I buy music and software.

Some of it is still way too expensive for me, though. I’m using 3D printing for wargaming stuff (custom minis, unit conversions), so Poser is really interesting to me. The problem is, it’s just so expensive, so I’m trying out Daz3D.

Just saying that there are quite enough free tools to do this kind of job, either using the STL or the IGS file (which the original author should have shared as STEP instead).

Of course it may not be as straightforward/easy/painless as with a $multi-k package, but it can be done.
