Current control problem

I have set alpha_current 0.5,beta_current 1,gamma_current 2. I found the actual current is not enough. I have check the board , I think maybe the mcp4451 is bad. i want to replace it, but mcp4451 have 5k,10k,50k,100k, which one is the smoothieboard used? thank you.

Hey there !

One of the batch of Smoothieboard had one resistor that needed to be changed near the digipot.
It’s possible that your resistor was not changed.

Do you have a 3X, 4X or 5X board ?

When did you buy the board ?

Does your board say Smoothieboard v1.0 or v1.0a ?

Cheers

Hello togther,

I guess I have a similar problem.

I’m using the smoothieboar 5x in the newest version. Everything works well so far except for the current control.
When a single motor is running my gauge shows me about 0.3 - 0.42 Amps. It doesn’t matter if I set the current control parameters to 0.1 A, 0.5A 1.5 A or 2A. But I need a higher torque (means a higher current).
Does anyone have an idea why the smoothieboard doesn’t accept my settings in this case?

My current control parameters are the following:

digipotchip mcp4451
digipot_max_current 2.0
digipot_factor 113.33

alpha_current 2.0
beta_current 2.0
gamma_current 2.0

Thanks and greetings

Do you have this problem for all stepper motor drivers ?

I’m only using the x and y axis at the moment and I’ve that problem with both axis. I didn’t tried the other axis yet.

Where did you get your board ?

From Robotseed about 2-3 weeks ago. I changed the wiring of the motor from parllel to series now. This way gauge shows about 0.75 amps but still not the full amps.

Wait are you measuring the board consumption when holding the motor in place ?

How are you measuring current ?

Hey,
Ive had an this issue for a while now and never got around to trying to trouble shoot.
Changing the motor current seems to have no effect on my board.
Which boards have this resistor problem, I have a v1.0a board.
Which resistor and what value does it need to be swapped for?
Thanks

Hey.

If your current doesn’t change, and you are certain of that, you need to get your board replaced, please contact wolf.arthur@gmail.com and explain the problem.

Cheers.
