Cutting out a Thein dust collector to hook to my shop vac and CNC

Cutting out a Thein dust collector to hook to my shop vac and CNC machine. Have I said how cool it is to have a bigger cnc? My old Rockliffe was 12x12.

I purchased a new Irwin upcut spiral bit before I started!

Bruce, I remember you mentioned using Cut2D as your graphic to code converter; what drafting package are you using? I have been using TurboCad 19 2D/3D for a couple years now and like it, but it does not seem to transfer dxf files effectively (Cut2D Trial shows the output as blank) and I’m wondering what I am doing wrong. Ideas?

Looks Nice!

@Bear_U Sometimes when I import DXF files they get imported off the material. I have to zoom way out and “locate them”. That being said I’ve only used aspire and vcarve, haven’t used cut2d but assume it’s close to the same

@Bear_U I experience the same thing with dxf import to inkscape, without reading about the format it seems like dxf doesn’t automatically move drawings to the centre position, so depending on how you do your output you will have different offset.
It is a good thing really, how else would we line up several different dxf files on top of each other.

@Bear_U I use different tools FreeCad, sketch-up, Cam-Bam if I cannot find a suitable dxf to modify. Cut2d imports most dxf files, except those in the newest versions of Autocad.
I also use CUt-2d to create a lot of the shapes too. This Thein dust system, I drew everything within Cut2D, except the ARC, which I just used a wizard in Mach3 to do.

I think several of these tools have trouble with newer versions of DXF, maybe above version 12?

The dxf format allows the origin to specified. So it depends on how the person set the origin in the dxf when created. Some CAM packages allow for easy manipulation of this while other do not.

@Eric_Edwards Definitely something to keep an eye on Eric. I have had to train myself to place my drawings either with the origin at the center of the work or at the lower left corner for CNC, where most of my previous work didn’t matter because the printer or plotter would automatically recenter the output.
