Day 3: I laser cut the top and bottom chassis out of white acrylic. I know it is not tough and will probably break, but I had scrap left over from another project and it matched the color scheme. So far I have not put any money into this car. Everything is scrap parts or leftover material from other projects. That will change soon as I place an order to hobbyking. lol
Perfect ! Congrats
nice, maybe you could try other compounds, i know laser cutting ABS is annoyingly smelly and toxic but that might be a less brittle option for impacts? I think i had a sheet of lexan before that was pretty durable for impacts, but i dont think it lasered well.
Yeah, I was thinking about other materials a little. I like the idea of laser cutting these parts because they finish in about 5 min. Compare that to 3d printing them which takes hours. Acrylic is not great, and I can’t laser cut Lexan. HDPE might work, or hardboard too. I might just waterjet aluminum versions when these break. I am gonna make aluminum wishbones here in a few weeks I think.
the top plate, bottom plates, shock towers, A-arms, and turnbuckles are all 2 dimensional. If you had access to a waterjet, I’d do all those parts in polycarbonate. I’ve done that before, (well, some parts in aluminum). Here’re several vehicles almost completely waterjetted –

there’s some waterjetted titanium in the funky gearbox.
I can use the waterjet and I just pay for the time it is cutting. I think it is about $3 per minute that the machine is cutting. I think I will try cutting the wishbones and shock towers from 6061 aluminum. Then anodizing them.
