Does anyone have any references to how sandstone printers work?

Does anyone have any references to how sandstone printers work? I google’d for a bit and the hits are mostly on the post process. I saw the Shapeways vid as they demonstrated the Z650 printer, but I’m curious to know the process…TIA.

A layer of powder is spread over the build area. An ink jet print head then deposits fluid where solid material is desired across the build area. Repeat. When done, the loose powder is removed with brush or air. The part usually needs post processing - such as infiltration with resin - to achieve final strength.

The actual binder that holds the part together is usually in dry form in the powder. The ink jet fluid is just an activator - water and/or alcohol.

Further questions welcome.

Not exactly what you ask but you might want to google\read up on the open3dp project. They experimented on printing with tons of different materials…
