I got an email from the people running the kickstarter: Justin Policarpio and Reiner Schmidt say:

We are using the L647x motor driver. The drivers are controlled over the SPI bus so they can be driven from a minimum of 4 IOs.

On the SlushEngine we are using many of the IOs to handle the boards different functions.

There are 6 IOs left over and they are accessible though the expansion header.

We also added 8 IOs which are available over the i2c bus on the SlushEngine. Drivers for these are included with the SlushEngine
Python and C drivers.
