Does anyone know what skeinforge settings I should be adjusting to fix these defects? I’m running sailfish on a thing-o-matic and have the prints coming out very nice other than surfaces like this and some ugly zipper.

+Peter van der Walt Do you want to recommend a slicer? Also you should really drop the Jumanji jpg with that meme

No offense taken  I know skeinforge is ancient but quirks aside gives pretty good results. I’ll have to try messing with slic3r again at somepoint

Slic3r generates a lot of config file churn for me, Cura and Kisslicer are my go-to tools.

Increase infill, increase top solid layers (can’t remember what the exact setting is called in SF), increase cooling, decrease temperature, increase extrusion multiplier. All or either of those can be a part of fixing this.
But really, switch to a modern slicer as they do have some smarter means of detecting (and dealing with) areas like these that need some extra attention. Both Slic3r and Cura(Engine) are good options, even if Slic3r is rapidly morphing into Skeinforge these days.

In addition to what @Thomas_Sanladerer said, see if you can decrease the layer height. If you print shorter layers you won’t need as many top layers to get the same filled effect.

Thanks all for the advice, I’ll go try slic3r, cura, kisslicer, mattercontrol, and if this doesn’t work go back to tinkering with skeinforge. Would anyone recommend simplify3d? It seems cool but the 140 dollar price tag is kind of scary.

It reviews really well…I’m still spending those chunks of free cash on printer parts…perhaps for Xmas. I really REALLY like Cura. it’s initial assumptions are very good.

@Nathaniel_Swartz I am very happy with simplify3d. It was a long time since I used another slicer. However the problems you are showing in the pictures can be fixed in any of the free slicers through the settings. The various slicers all have their strengths, to me simplify3d has an unsurpassed support control/generation and very good gcode visualization.

I too, fully recommend simplify3d. I haven’t used anything else in months.

Also what firmware are you using? Switching from sprinter to marlin made a big difference in print quality on my prints.

Thanks again all. slic3r gives me smooth round tops but very sparse flat surfaces so I need to keep fiddling with that.
@Michael_Scholtz I’m using sailfish but I’m a few interations back.
