Early work on my Wizard Staff. I’m loving this library!
Yeah, what would we do without Fire2012!?
Looks cool! Are you planning to run 4 strips total? What are your plans for materials?
PEX pipe works amazingly as a diffuser, but I haven’t found it in greater than 1 inch diameter. Standard schedule 40 PVC unfortunately is too opaque. I guess you could always use clear acrylic if you wanted to embrace seeing the pixels.
So far for my staffs I’ve just used a single strip, coated in spray insulation and inside of PEX… but I’m looking for something a little more stiff to be able to make a tall one and attach it to a bike so I can ride around without it flexing too much
@chad_steinglass at the moment I have 5 strips of 50 on top of 1.5” schedule 40 PVC. I eventually plan to cast over the top of that with clear resin, texture and frost the surface, then stain. I haven’t tried it yet, so I’m not sure if the stain will be translucent, but I’ve seen a few YouTube videos with strips cast in frosted resin.
@Jeff_Robotguy_Kroll Thanks for the reply. Gotcha - so at the moment your strips are on the outside of the PVC. Definitely share your results and learnings from the rest of your manufacturing process! I’m looking forward to seeing how the resin and stain look over the strips.
Over the past year or so working on LED projects, I’ve found that the materials and methods part of building things has been as interesting and ingenuity sparking (necessity is the mother of invention!) as the coding and control of the LEDs
For diffusing you can get good results using cotton batting.
