End of last year I decided to build a new 3D printer. At that time I already owned a very cheap Chinese Prusa I3 printer, it worked, but wasn’t a very reliable machine and it was dead slow.
So I bought a P3steel chassis from a Spanish webshop, which turned out to be a very good base for a Prusa I3 style printer. It’s rock solid, easy and fast to bolt together and you need very few 3D printed parts. I bought Kysan 1124090 stepper motors for the X/Y axis, and 2 stepper motors with 8mm lead screws for the Z-axis. For the hot end I choose the popular E3D V6 for 1.75mm filament, with the bowden addon.
I put it together over several weeks as the various parts arrived. The last part to arrive was the extruder, which did cause me a bit of a headache…
In the end I tried out 7 different extruders. The last one I tried is the E3D Titan, which I like a lot. But it was also the most expensive one.
I’ve written down my experiences with the 7 extruders and the many mistakes I made a long the way on my blog: http://www.bajdi.com/3d-printer-extruders/

Great review

I’ll second that.

Great showing , some original drive gear in kit are horrible,
on Falla 3d we tested the your first extruder with robotdigg gear and this can print fine at 150mm/s too, but if nozzle clog filament breake and start to make pla springs :),

#saintflint know fine because born in quadrap community and absolutely “horse” from other standard extruder but sincerly no born for change filament frequently.

Nice writeup and I like, that you tell about the mistakes you made. But basically, you didn’t put much effort into using one off them. It reads like: “the pushfit broke, i don’t care, next one”. I had wade-style extruder and they worked flawlessly and silent. But they are big. I have all the “china”-extruders you mentioned, too (except the bulldog-clone) and they are crap like you said. But the printed ones, all off them, work very well. And for the Titan… Hmm… You have it like 2 weeks now. Maybe write about it again in some weeks from now? I have the Titan, too, and it is good. But a comparison with such a product after a short period of usage always rings my alarmbells…
Anyway: Keep on writing!

excellent review!!! i miss thr airtripper (I have printed around 20 kg with it and a MK7 with volcano and 70mm/s) and EZstruder.

@Rene_Jurack I printed ±1kg of PLA with my first extruder. A lot more with the wades and the last Chinese extruder with geared stepper motor. So far I’ve printed ±0.5kg PLA and a couple of small parts in Filaflex with the Titan. It was never my intension to buy/test so many extruders but it was the one part on my printer that I wasn’t happy about. So I kept searching for a better solution.
