@Eclsnowman , as promised. Pictures of the Azteeg x3 1.0 and 2.0; headers, and modifications shown. Left is modified, notice solder blob has been wicked up on the left one above the vref pin. You can see the female headers added onto the 2.0 board as well.
Perfect. That makes a lot more sense now. Can I just modify the marlin settings for the x3 pro in marlin to the correct number of channels for the x3 v2 and it will work?

Is this to enable digital current limit control? Or some other i2c driver control method instead of step/direction?
