Finishing up my first print on my xyz da vinci. Nexus 10 pogo charger dock. .2 mm thickness, medium density, normal speed. Looks like I will need some post production sand paper.
Try an Acetone Vapor bath instead of sand paper! it’ll give it a glossy finish, and remove all the layering marks. you will need a large glass jar (like a cookie jar) and regular acetone (paint Thinner) Heat the acetone in the jar until you can see it begin to condensate along the upper area of the jar. Place your printed object on a metal pedestal above the liquid acetone. I can usually fit the jar on the heated bed, and use it to heat the acetone safely. then you can watch it happen… and it Does happen relatively quickly (Minutes). Suggested Temp for Acetone 180 C.
Try it on a few objects first, to get used to the technique. Then try your hand at larger pieces.
I’ve been meaning to try the acetone method for awhile.
Just to be clear though paint thinner is usually not acetone.
it’s pretty simple, and the effect is very nice. but beware if you have some parts with extremely thin walls or super fine details, these can be lost if you treat it for too long.
So always error on the side of caution. Because if left in the vapor too long, it will melt into a puddle of plastic. :O)
@Brad_Hopper Is correct, it’s closer to Fingernail polish remover than it is paint thinner. However, be this as it may. it can be found in paint departments of most Wal Marts or Home Centers. which was the reason I stated it as I did. :O)
Good to know! Any tips for sanding? This is just cheap abs.
I once tried sanding, useing very fine grit sanpaper, but it left the plastic fuzzy, and dull looking, So I then tried Emeory cloth in extra fine grit, and while the plastic no longer looked so Fuzzy, the finish was still dull and muted.
That’s awful! What’s your layer height? Looks like at some regular interval, there’s a rounding error that’s causing layers to be over-compressed and smoosh (that’s the technical term) outward.
I bow the the MASTER! Whosa whatsis
I use Dremel for finishing. You can both send and polish to get glossy appearance. Acetone vapor bath might be quicker and sometimes gives you better results but you have to be aware that acetone vapor can be explosive so I avoid it.
Did you simply use the gluestick provided for the glass? Congrats on your first print.
ya, i have a had a few close calls with vapor gasses and already have dremmel, might try that first.
Also note, turns out my software and firmware were out of date on my printer. just did a update going to print some more, see if I can get those slicing errors and rounding errors reduced!
@Crystal_S_UnStuckInL yes. Just that glue stick.
After my firmware and xyz software update. The printer seems to be printing faster and more accurately. But im just doing simple end caps now.
Do you know anything about a Da Vinci hack to re-load the cartridge with generic filament?
@Whosa_whatsis Every single Da Vinci I’ve seen has those artifacts in the prints… including the samples from their own site. It boggles my mind that they didn’t even try to fix that prior to releasing this to the market.
