First 3d carving on my shapeoko. Took about 4hrs with a 1/16th ballnose. Very pleased.
Turned out great! What feeds you used?
Used a 1/4" endmill to make the roughing pass down to 0.5mm clearance. Then did the 3d finish path at 1000mm/min at 1mm depth. Its a piece of basswood so is very easy to cut.
how deep is the relief?
The baseline is cut about 13mm into the surface. Then the largest feature (the head of the large mushroom) is 6mm up from there.
What software did you use to do the design?
I found a random graphic online to give me the basic outline, I then modified it a bit in Photoshop and traced it into Illustrator with Live Paint. This then gave me a vector dxf which I saved out and imported into Vectric Aspire. I then used the 3d modelling functionality in there to add the various rounded effects. Worked pretty well all in all. I have to say I am loving Aspire, well worth it.
Nice Ben… the ShapeOko is a great little machine for this sort of stuff and Aspire is a great piece of software!
Fantastic result. I don’t think I realised the amount of upfront work required prior to milling on the Shapeoko. Looks like your hard work really payed off.
Yeah I think that is the most learnt lesson. CNC is actually a lot harder than things like 3d printing. Before you even get into tools and feeds you have a lot of 2d design work to do. Its a lot of fun though!
