First night with our completed printrbot simple metal with heared bed kit.

First night with our completed printrbot simple metal with heared bed kit. Once I had the extruder going the right direction things started working out. One 3mm cube and one fan shroud in the books.

The first few layers are a bit shakey, but I am pleased with the results considering this is my third printever. I think I am a bit lucky with my callibration.

And yes… very addicting…

Very cool. If your printrbot simple metal has a heated bed, use the kapton tape supplied. Don’t use the blue tape.

Congratulations! The first prints can either be really rough or really good. The key to the first few layers is getting layer 1 to stick well and have a good thickness. If your first layer is messed up then you can have a good amount of curling or mess up your print head if you are dragging in the build plate. You also might want to check your first layer speed and make it a little slower if the first few layers are a little messed up. I usually run my prints at 35mm/s and run the first layer at 17mm/s. Just a personal preference.

Excellent work though and you picked a great printer to get. Those @Printrbot printers are top notch in my book.

@Dat_Chu - I have the kapton tape on the bed… I was getting a tad impatient so I threw on the blue tape to see if it would make a difference on the first layer. More experimenting with temps and speeds today.

Is there a recommended speed and temp for PLA on the simple metal w/ heated bed? I am still digging through forums, etc.

I have no problem with the first layer sticking. Make sure that your extruder is secure. Then perform z calibration again. Once done, do not use blue tape since it is worse on heated bed (from what I have read).

If the z calibration is done correctly, your print should come out with perfect quality and sticks immediately at 200 degree, 70 degree heated bed, 30 speed all around. You can also have the initial/bottom layer speed at 10 to make sure it really sticks.

Once that works well, you can increase the speed slowly until you deem the print quality is no longer acceptable.

I will remove the tape and try your suggested settings. Thank you.

Any time, are you using Cura or Repetier. Printrbot has Repetier settings file on their website. The forum also has some decent Cura settings.

I noticed this weekend that Cura has “magically” replaced the Repetier config/docs in the Guides. There’s also a new getting started profile for Cura on the site, too. You might try those and tweak as needed.

Interesting. I have been using Cura since I got my Printrbot Simple Metal heated bed. The UI is much better.

Yes, Cura did show up all of a sudsen. I think Simple Makers still shows Repetier.

I defaulted to Cura after following along with Tom’s build videos on YouTube.
