Fischertechnik, basically a German counterpart to Lego or Meccano/Erector, have decided to make a 3D printer from their construction set parts - with mixed results.

Wow great job on German Reprap’s part…

GRRF hardly contributes anything to the OpenSource community. They went full closed source recently.

Wow that looks like a very unstable hot end. I noticed the smooth rods moving back and forth on the y axis, but I’m not sure how much that would affect the print quality itself. Did you see a lot of issues because of that?

@Justin_Nesselrotte i don’t think the sliding rods were the issue here.

@Justin_Nesselrotte think about it, the bearings slide on the rods, if the rods slide, it’s actually just a 2 stage linear motion system as long as they stay supported, i.e. do not slide out of the mounting holes. its not ideal but its the least of the issues as it is just transferring the linear motion in the correct axis to a different part.

There is nothing about this machine that is designed for accurate and reliable 3d printing it is entirely an exercise in selling parts made of injection molded plastic at a rediculous markup by using the hype of 3d printing.

The parts included are some of the more technical parts from various kits Fischertech makes, just like with Lego the more specialized the part the less demand across the range of kits, so they dump some of the more specialized ones into a overpriced ‘3d printer’ kit and abuse the 3d printer community, abuse their own customers expecting some kind of quality and educational experience not focused on “how to do it completely wrong”, they get a backlog of specialty parts sold. Not impressed with the intentions or results from Fischertech, will never buy anything from them. That is my impression after thinking about this printer far to much for not owning it (thank god!).

Great review and good point about the license breach. It always makes me little sad that some producers like to use open source soft- and hardware but don’t want to contribute anything to it.
