For obvious reason (crane style) I've opted for bowden setup and now I'm battling

For obvious reason (crane style) I’ve opted for bowden setup and now I’m battling with jam/filament grinding issue. My current setup is with E3Dv6 and titan. Things I’ve noticed and tried to mitigate but still no success:

  • PLA slowing down print speed to 40mm/s
  • vase mode no jamming. Rapid retraction appear to be causing the issue here.
  • lower retraction length down to 2mm per E3D recommendation.
  • lower retraction speed down to 20mm/s
  • up temp print to 210°c

Those with bowden setup your input is greatly appreciated as my collection of failed benchy is quickly piling up…

I used to have problem with rapid retraction too with bowden setup, turn out the bowden tube have slightly kink in one spot, it’s not catch on filament when pull normally but when I yank it stuck a bit.
Change the whole tube and problem gone.

Yes I’ve tried both extreme end of the spring tension from very tight to fairly loose. Eventually when it got to the layer where it starts retracting rapidly it would start grinding.

I thought about getting bondtech qr but I really want to see if I can rule out that this is titan related issue

I’ve been having the same trouble with my Titan extruder, and mine isn’t even a bowden setup. I’ve checked hot end cleanliness, temp accuracy, spring tension, and slowed the retraction way down, and it still grinds. Maybe I just don’t have the right combo yet…

How long is your Bowden tube? I’ve got the exact combo with a ~ 350mm tube and zero issues. Printing 70mm/s and faster. I use large retracts, 5mm at a fairly good speed. Once in a while I’ll grind filament but more often than not it’s during the first later. Don’t think it’s due to retracts?

My bowden tube is about 630mm long. Here’s what the end of the filament looks like everytime it starting to grind and I have to stop the print and pull it out. The buldge there i believe is what causing the jam

Do you have a full metal heatbrake or with a tube inside?

Its v6 not the lite

I have had this issue and it was related to a fake E3Dv6 metal heatbrake. The fake ones are not smooth enough and cause a jam as pictured in the photo.

I got mine from matterhacker so I sure hope is genuine… perhaps I didn’t push the bowden tube hard enough to sit on the heatbreak?.. I did push it until it stop…

How fast are you retracting?

already slower than I would like it 20mm/s

I’ll post you my settings when I get home. Iirc my filament looks like a sharp point when I pull it out of the hot end.

Thanks. I have the lite version and will try to swapped the heatsink with that and see if I still have trouble.

Well not sure what happened but I swapped with lite heat sink and ran the ptfe all the way down to nozzle and it works. Rapid retraction performed beautifully.

So something wrong w/ the V6 (non-lite) is it possible you got a knockoff even though it was bot from a reputable seller?

Btw I forgot my retract info, was going to post it last night.

Fwiw:
Retract dust=5mm
Extra restart =0.5mm
Vertical lift=1.0mm
Speed =1800mm/min
Coast 0.5mm

Interesting the wiki assembly for E3D V6 actually do not recommend retract length beyond 2mm…

What can I say… it works lol
