From the “I guess I wouldn’t expect otherwise” department…I wondered if Makerbot had started shipping the Z18 yet, as I hadn’t seen a whole lotta hoopla about it…went to their site, clicked on the order button to see shipping lead times and…whoa, talk about bait and switch! I wonder what percentage of Makerbot buyers find a $1700 upsell before you buy the first spool of filament acceptable? I ALSO wonder how many folks THEN opt for the three year protection plan? $10G’s and you haven’t made a single part yet.

$450 for an airtight cabinet and $1250 for a metal box…saaay, wasn’t the Z18 originally supposed to be $6500?

But you see, the $225 filament spool they add after you click “add to cart” is given to you for free… And you get an accessories bundle worth another $200 as well! That’s a great deal, right? Right?

I’ve had New Car deals that didn’t feel as shifty as this.

Well, not a big surprise, I guess, since 3D systems and Stratasys have been charging exorbitant prices like this (and more) for decades, right? But yeah, crazy for what you get. Even crazier: some people are actually buying this. Too much money, too little sense.

What gets me is: to get to $6500, you have to remove the one year extended warrantee. Does this mean you get NO warrantee, otherwise?

Standard non-EU warranty: (D) WARRANTY PERIOD Six (6) months after the date of the first delivery of Product to first End-User except that Smart Extruders shall only be replaced by MakerBot without cost to End-User during the first ninety (90) day period after the date of the first delivery of Product or Smart Extruder (“Warranty Period”).

So $750 for the last six months of the first year, then $790 each year after that. Whattabargain!

We got one in at work 2 weeks ago. It did one 38 hour print then stopped working. Still waiting on an “updated” head.
