From the “This Deserves it’s own thread” Department:
-I don’t print ABS because I don’t have a heated bed.
-I had a few successful prints using blue tape + Superglue to get adhesion but the fumes were NASTY.
-Meshmixer lets you reorient your part, sometimes in wierd and unusual ways.
So use Meshmixer to tilt your part so that it only touched the build plate in a few small places. Ensure initial layer adhesion (currently a problem for me…the part contacts the bed in 4 places…currently has a 75% success rate. 
)
The ideal rotation in this case is 45 degrees on one axis, then 35 degrees on the other, but you need much more aggressive support to keep it from being knocked over while printing.
The office on the main floor of the house is an enclosed chamber. 
@Whosa_whatsis I’m discovering that. And the corner of the print needs a pad as well.
pva (elmers glue stick.) makes abs stick as good or better than ABS slurry in most cases, without the fumes. A 30 pack is super cheap on amazon (elmers)
oh - missed that. Yeah - hotter the better - silicone heating pads are surprisingly cheap and quick to arrive from ali-baba…
yeah, I was reluctant to lose even more Z-height…the original 3DR I think was good for 200mm, and I’m down to 164mm…got plenty of extrusion now, but I’d have to rewire the motors and I’ve just been lazy.
My abs dosent smell at all. I only. Ever had one price of sample filament smell. And it had been sitting out for a long time. I wonder if the smell is related to water absorption.
I almost never get a smell from ABS unless it is overheated, but I know that some people are more sensitive to such things.
I’ve had good luck with ulitmachine. I can detect no smell. the smell from mine came from a new solidoodle as well. Maybe there is a coating or wiring that smells when the hot end is initially heated. do you have the acrylic assembly?
I’m using Octave filament and there’s an odor…not strong, not really bad, but there IS one.
I had some bad experiences with octave - has the quality improved? Stuff warped a lot and had very inconsistent diameter range (2.8 to 3.3mm diameter)
I don’t know enough about it to say…it warps, but I’m using a cold bed, so that’s not unexpected.
I can’t detect an abs odor from more than 3 feet away, from any brand I have used ranging from extremely cheap chinese stuff to midrange decent stuff (haven’t tried “The good stuff” yet) Other people I know cant tolerate being in the same house with it. YMMV.
