Giving PLA a shot on my E3D v5 3mm direct, but it keeps jamming.

Giving PLA a shot on my E3D v5 3mm direct, but it keeps jamming. I’ve tried varying temperatures (185-230), tweaking retracts (settled at .35mm at 20mm/s), changing retraction frequency, changing the print speed(usually around 80mm/s), seasoning, changing hobbed bolt tension, and cooling the heat break. My filament diameter peaks at 2.92 and I’m using the stock cooling with a Greg’s accessible extruder. Any other ideas? E3D has yet to reply to my email, I’m beginning to think I got one of the few faulty hotends. Thanks as always :slight_smile:

Did you previously run ABS through it? If so then you probably have residue in it that is causing the jams. There are several techniques for cleaning it out.

Even if the temp is high enough to extrude the abs out too? What’s the easiest way to clear it?

Changed the thermistor in marlin to 5?

Yep!

Have you pushed a small piece of Ptfe tube into the Hotend?

I have not, where can I get some?

The v5 prints pla just fine if you push the fan cover all the way down so it touches the heater block. Goal is to get air blowing across the throat.

No need for ptfe

I tried that, no dice.

I had one piece of Bowden tube in my shipment. Just remember, pla is like sugar. If you put sugar in a pan, it will stick. It is a full Metal Hotend, so it’s the same thing. If you don’t have a ptfe tube, try to dip the top of filament into some oil and push it manually through the Hotend. Try this twice and you should be able to print.

Unfortunately, I’ve tried seasoning. It helped me get through short prints, but as soon as I threw something longer than a couple hours at it I started getting jammed again. Thanks for the help though!

Can you Post a picture of your Hotend construction?

@Mark_Estefanos very interesting. @Sanjay_Mortimer ?

@Pascal_Paetzold Did you want the hotend separated? Here’s my etruder setup. https://imgur.com/MeCqof1 I’ve been emailing Sanjay, it might help to have him see this post as well.

I’ll get back to you tomorrow, been doing non-3D printing things all weekend! In the meantime this may be helpful:

Thanks @Sanjay_Mortimer , I understand it’s important to get some time off :slight_smile: I’ve already looked at the troubleshooting guide, as well as the forum posts detailing different solutions.
